It is those goals that then help to transform you, your mindset, they propel you forward. They move you from where you are now, not only closer to where you want to be but ensure that you never go back to the thinking that kept you limited before.
How to Make an Effective Goal
To have an effective Goal the number 1 aspect is to ensure it is YOUR goal. Many times I have experienced with my clients that their goal was never really theirs. It is one that has been passed on, projected from parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, even peers.
An effective Goal is a goal you are invested in for yourself. It does not mean that a goal that has originated from another is not achievable. Quite the contrary. Often they are more achievable as you may have an overwhelming drive to please that person. However, the satisfaction from the achievement is what then becomes lacking. This is what can often lead to disappointment, unfulfillment even when others deem you to be in a very successful career or living a very successful life. The knock on effect can have devastating effects.
The Goal needs to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time Defined, also known as S.M.A.R.T as I mentioned in my Why Most New Years Resolutions do not Work article.
You need to be invested in the end result your WHY. Why is it important to you, why do you wish to achieve it, What difference would it make to you and your life experience. This is a hugely important step as this is what motivates you to keep going when the going gets tough.
Visualisation & Accountability
Visualisation and accountability are my next two essential steps. Your Goal really needs to be at the forefront until it is achieved. The mind is a very clever tool but it needs consistent input. Ideally we not only need to keep your goal in your conscious mind we need to embed it into the subconscious mind. I am a huge advocate for vision boards but they are no good to you if they are not in view. Pinterest, cork boards, apps, there are many ways to create your vision board but keep it in sight.
Accountability is another step to not be underestimated. How many times have you tried to achieve something on your own only to give up not long after you started?
The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on accountability and found that 65% of people completed their goal if they committed to someone. This increased to 95% if they committed to a person along with specific appointments with that person regarding their goal.
